Manufacturing CPQ knowledge base

CPQ for complex products, engineering rules, and production-ready outputs.

CPQ Guide is an independent encyclopedia of Configure, Price, Quote software for manufacturers. It explains how product configuration, constraints, costing, quotes, BOMs, CAD and integrations connect sales with engineering and production.

01 Not sales SaaS

Manufacturing and engineering CPQ, not CRM quoting kits.

02 Configuration logic

Rules, constraints, variants, CTO and ETO workflows.

03 Downstream data

Pricing, BOM, CAD, ERP, PLM and production handoff.

Requirements → configuration → rules → cost → quote → BOM → CAD → ERP

Definition

Manufacturing CPQ is not generic sales CPQ.

A manufacturer quoting a pump, air-handling unit, machine frame or specialty vehicle needs more than a price book and a PDF. The configuration has to be technically valid, costed from real structure, and usable downstream. Generic sales CPQ solves a different, usually simpler, commercial problem.

Manufacturing CPQ

Configuration · rules · engineering · BOM · CAD · production

  • Product models with options, dimensions and assemblies
  • Rules, constraints and engineering calculations
  • Cost rollups, quote documents and approvals
  • Configurable BOMs, CAD outputs and 3D validation
  • Handoff to ERP, PLM, PDM and production

Flow requirements → valid product → cost → quote → BOM/CAD → production

Generic sales CPQ

Catalog · discounts · CRM · proposals

  • Catalog bundles, discounts and proposal templates
  • CRM opportunity and quote workflow
  • Limited engineering feasibility checks
  • Little or no BOM and CAD generation
  • Sales acceleration without production data

Flow catalog → price → proposal

Why it matters

The value is in the mechanism, not the slogan.

CPQ helps manufacturers when it changes a specific step: validation, costing, documentation or handoff. If those mechanisms are missing, a prettier quote does not fix the factory.

01 ValidateFewer invalid configurations

Constraints block combinations that cannot be built, powered or assembled.

02 EngineerLess repetitive engineering

Standard variants stop bouncing to application engineering for the same checks.

03 QuoteFaster valid quotes

A complete, rule-checked configuration shortens the loop before a number is sent.

04 PriceMore consistent pricing

Cost rollups and commercial rules replace informal extras in spreadsheets.

05 HandoffCleaner production handoff

BOM, attributes and identifiers travel as data, not as notes in a PDF.

Explore by industry

Configuration complexity is industry-specific.

A valve, an HVAC unit and a specialty vehicle do not share the same option model. Industry pages connect real parameters, rules and downstream data — not a generic CPQ article with the sector name swapped.

Guides are written for people who select, implement or operate CPQ around configurable industrial products — not for generic sales-automation checklists.

How to Build a CPQ Product Model for Manufacturing

A manufacturing CPQ product model represents the structure, options, constraints, calculations, prices and downstream data needed to configure an engineered product accurately. This guide explains how to design one that supports quoting, engineering and production without becoming unmaintainable.

Glossary

Definitions first. Then the architecture.

The glossary is a core asset, not a footer link. Start with precise terms — CPQ, configurator, constraint, EBOM, CTO, ETO — then move into the guides that use them.

Software and selection

Vendor-neutral research for manufacturing fit.

Platform pages and buyer research stay independent of vendor marketing. The question is whether a system can represent the product and hand work to engineering and production.

Mission

The front door to manufacturing CPQ knowledge.

Use CPQ Guide to understand product configuration, judge software against industrial work, and connect quoting to engineering and production. This is editorial research, not a vendor pitch.
